Al brought the family to Nevada City as the war was ending, moving into what had originally been a miner's cabin on two acres on Red Dog Road, where Al had a dream of building an adobe house for the family.The family worked together building their adobe home. Mary and her daughter puddled adobe into forms for all the bricks to build a house, while Al and her son worked to make the adobe. Mary then worked with Al and her daughter laying all the bricks and troweling the finish edges, while her son mixed the concrete. After the walls were built, Mary went back to work to earn money for building materials, working as a legal secretary in Nevada City which allowed the adobe home to be completed in 1955.
